For power users and businesses, Microsoft offers Copilot Pro, a subscription plan that provides priority access to advanced models, faster performance, and integration with selected Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot, aimed at enterprises, embeds the assistant directly into Office applications, helping users draft documents, analyze spreadsheets, and create presentations.

Essentially, Copilot is a cloud-based AI companion that you can access through sidebars, websites, and native apps. It is not tied to any specific hardware; any Windows PC, Mac, or mobile device with a browser or the relevant app can use it. The intelligence comes from remote servers, so even a modest computer can run Copilot smoothly as long as it has a stable internet connection.

What is Copilot+?

Copilot+ is a different beast. It was introduced by Microsoft in May 2024 as a new category of Windows PCs designed specifically for AI. The name refers to a hardware and software certification standard, similar to how Intel Evo or AMD Ryzen branded laptops meet certain performance criteria. A Copilot+ PC must meet specific requirements, including a powerful neural processing unit (NPU) that can deliver at least 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second). This dedicated AI accelerator allows the device to perform AI workloads locally, on the machine itself, without needing to send everything to the cloud.

Copilot+ PCs are built around new-generation processors such as the Snapdragon X Series, AMD Ryzen AI 300, and Intel Core Ultra 200V series. These chips include an integrated NPU that is fast enough to handle AI models locally, which opens up a range of new features that are not available on regular PCs. Microsoft has positioned Copilot+ as a leap forward in personal computing, enabling real-time AI tasks that are faster, more private, and more responsive than cloud-based processing.

Key Differences Between Copilot and Copilot+

1. Hardware Dependency

The most fundamental difference is hardware. Copilot works on virtually any device with internet access, including older PCs, smartphones, and even smart TVs. It requires no special hardware because the heavy lifting is done in the cloud. Copilot+, on the other hand, is a hardware specification. To run Copilot+ features, you must own a certified Copilot+ PC. That means your computer must have a compatible NPU, a certain amount of RAM (typically 16 GB or more), and a solid-state drive with at least 256 GB of storage. The NPU is the core component; without it, the advanced local AI features simply cannot run.

2. Where the AI Processing Happens

Copilot relies on cloud computing. When you type a prompt, the request is transmitted to Microsoft's servers, where the language model processes it and sends back a response. Microsoft has created several features that are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs. One of the headline features is Recall, which uses the NPU to take periodic snapshots of your screen and index them, allowing you to search for anything you have seen using natural language. This feature has been met with both excitement and criticism due to privacy concerns, but Microsoft has since made it opt-in and encrypted by default.

Another exclusive feature is Cocreator in Paint, an AI image generation tool that works locally on the NPU. Live Captions is also enhanced on Copilot+ PCs. It can translate real-time audio from 44 languages into English captions locally, which is helpful for video calls, watching foreign films, or understanding lectures without a cloud dependency. Windows Studio Effects are another differentiator; they use the NPU to blur backgrounds, adjust eye contact, and apply noise suppression during video conferences, all in real time. These effects feel much more natural and reliable than software-only solutions on older PCs.

4. Performance and Battery Life

Because Copilot+ uses a dedicated NPU for AI tasks, it can perform these tasks with lower power consumption than using the CPU or GPU. This translates to better battery life when running AI applications. For example, scoring a video call with background effects on a regular PC might drain the battery, but on a Copilot+ PC, the NPU handles it efficiently. Additionally, many Copilot+ PCs are powered by Arm-based processors like the Snapdragon X, which are designed for energy efficiency. As a result, these devices often have impressive battery life, some lasting up to 15-2o hours on a single charge. That is a tangible advantage for mobile users who rely on AI-assisted tools throughout the day.

However, not all AI workloads are faster on Copilot+ PCs. Cloud-based Copilot can sometimes outperform local models because it leverages enormous server clusters and the latest GPT models. Local NPUs are still limited in raw compute compared to the cloud, but they excel at specific, well-optimized tasks like image processing and speech recognition. In practice, Copilot+ provides a hybrid approach: local for quick, private tasks and cloud for complex requests.

5. Software Integration

Copilot is deeply integrated into the entire Microsoft ecosystem. It appears in Windows 10 and 11 as a sidebar, in Microsoft Edge as a chat button, in Office apps as a writing assistant, and in the mobile app as a standalone chatbot. This broad integration means you can use Copilot regardless of your device or operating system, as long as you are signed into a Microsoft account.

Copilot+ takes integration further on supported PCs. The hardware enables new system-level features that are native to Windows 11. For instance, the Copilot key on the keyboard allows instant access to a chat interface, but the real magic lies in the seamless AI features woven into the OS. The Settings app, for example, uses natural language queries to help you adjust settings. Photo editing apps can leverage the NPU to give you one-click improvements. This deeper integration is unique to Copilot+ because it requires hardware access that ordinary PCs lack.

Which One Should You Choose?

The choice between Copilot and Copilot+ is not a matter of one being better than the other; they serve different purposes. If you already have a working PC and want to use AI to boost your productivity, Copilot is a free and easy option. It works across devices, and you can access it right from your browser or install the app. It offers cutting-edge language models and can handle complex prompts that local models might struggle with.

If you are shopping for a new laptop and want access to “next-generation†AI features, Copilot+ is a worthwhile investment. A Copilot+ PC gives you the benefits of offline AI, better privacy, and exclusive tools that make daily tasks more convenient. The initial lineup of Copilot+ PCs, including devices from Microsoft Surface and other laptop makers, has shown that there is real value in having an NPU. However, you should be aware that some Copilot+ exclusive features, such as Recall, have faced scrutiny and have been refined over time. It is also important to note that Copilot+ is not a replacement for Copilot; in fact, all Copilot+ PCs still come with standard Copilot built in. The cloud assistant remains accessible, so you get the best of both worlds.
