
Phone App Gets Call Context
The Phone app in iOS 27 introduces a major new capability called Call Context. This feature is designed to save time and make calls more productive by automatically pulling relevant information from the Mail app and presenting it directly in the Phone interface. When you call a participating organization, the system looks at the phone number and cross-references it with email correspondence stored on your device. For example, calling an airline might display your flight confirmation code, while calling a hotel could show your reservation reference. This means users no longer need to dig through their inbox or juggle between apps just to find a booking number.
Call Context is powered by Apple Intelligence, the company's family of machine learning technologies. Crucially, the processing happens entirely on-device, which means Apple does not send the contents of your emails to any server. The feature uses the phone number as a key, and it does not listen to what you say during the call. The on-device model is capable of parsing email text to extract entities such as flight numbers, reservation codes, hotel stay dates, and restaurant confirmations, then matching them to the contact number.
Because Call Context requires advanced on-device intelligence, it is only available on iPhone 15 Pro and newer when making calls. Apple has also confirmed that the feature works when the same user is making a phone call from an iPad or Mac linked through Continuity. This cross-device support means that even if the iPhone is locked or nearby, the Call Context information can be shown on the larger screen of a Mac or iPad.
As with other Apple Intelligence features, availability may initially be limited to certain countries and languages. Apple typically rolls out intelligence features gradually, and users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other English-speaking markets will likely be first. In a later update, Apple may expand language support to other regions. Users who wish to opt out can disable Call Context in the Phone app settings, giving them control over how the feature behaves.
FaceTime Introduces Dual Capture
FaceTime is also receiving a notable upgrade in iOS 27, and the headline feature is Dual Capture. This feature allows calling users on compatible iPhones to send video from both the front and back cameras simultaneously. The recipient will see the user's face alongside whatever the rear camera is pointed at. For example, during a call, a user could show a new gadget while also explaining it with their facial reaction visible. This opens up more expressive and informative video conversations.
Dual Capture is available on the iPhone 17 lineup, which includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the newly introduced iPhone Air. These devices are presumably equipped with the necessary processing power to handle two camera feeds at once while maintaining high frame rates and adequate thermal performance. To activate Dual Capture, users simply tap the camera flip button while on a FaceTime call. The interface will then switch into a dual stream mode, and a small preview of the front camera view can be toggled on or off. If a user chooses to turn off the front camera feed, the call will continue with only the rear camera visible.
An important aspect of Dual Capture is that the receiving side does not need a specific device. Any iPhone running iOS 27 can receive the dual video stream. This is due to the fact that the receiving device only needs to decode the incoming video, which is handled by software. Therefore, even users with an older iPhone can enjoy Dual Capture calls as long as the other person is calling from a compatible iPhone 17 model.
FaceTime Reliability Improvements
In addition to Dual Capture, iOS 27 includes several quality-of-life improvements for FaceTime. One such improvement is better connection quality during poor network conditions. Apple has refined video and audio codecs or adapted bitrate streaming to maintain more stable communication, so users are less likely to see frozen frames or chopped audio. The system might now dynamically adjust resolution based on the strength of the network, keeping the call usable even when bandwidth is low.
Another meaningful improvement is the ability to transition seamlessly between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. In previous versions of iOS, a FaceTime call could drop when a user moved from a home Wi-Fi network to a cellular connection, or vice versa. iOS 27 changes this by implementing a smarter handoff mechanism. The iPhone will attempt to maintain the ongoing call session by handing off data between available network interfaces. This means users can walk out of a house and continue an ongoing FaceTime call without interruption, as long as the carrier supports the necessary handover protocols.
Accessibility and Safety Enhancements
FaceTime's Live Captions are being expanded to include Traditional Chinese support. Live Captions was introduced as an accessibility feature that automatically transcribes what someone says during a FaceTime call in real time. In iOS 27, this transcription tool will now be available for Traditional Chinese users, allowing a wider range of people to benefit from real-time captioning. This is particularly beneficial for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals who communicate in Traditional Chinese.
Communication Safety is also being updated. Previously, the feature focused on detecting nudity in FaceTime video and Messages attachments. In iOS 27, it now extends to block gore and violence. This expansion means that parents can ensure children are not exposed to disturbing content during video calls or messaging conversations. Communication Safety uses on-device analysis to identify problematic imagery, and it works in a way that respects privacy. If a violation is detected, the system can blur the content and provide the user with several actions, including blocking the contact or notifying a parent or guardian.
The Evolution of Phone and FaceTime
The Phone app was the original marquee feature of the iPhone, yet it has seen relatively few major changes over the years. With iOS 27, Call Context marks one of the most significant updates to the calling experience in recent memory. It leverages the power of Apple Intelligence to make calls more efficient, turning a simple telephony function into a smart assistant layer.
FaceTime has likewise evolved from its predecessor into a full-featured communication tool. Since its debut with the iPhone 4 in 2010, FaceTime has expanded from Wi-Fi-only video calls to cellular support, then to group calls, spatial audio, and screen sharing. But Apple's approach differs in that it is implemented at the operating system level, making it more seamless and integrated into the existing call flow. The recipient does not need to install any extensions or adjust settings to view the dual stream.
Call Context also has an edge over similar features in other phone apps. While many smartphone dialers now use AI to identify unknown numbers or block spam, the ability to surface relevant email data is unique to Apple's ecosystem. It is this kind of integration that makes iOS 27 a compelling update for users who rely on the iPhone's built-in apps.
Availability and Rollout
iOS 27 is currently in beta, and both registered developers and public beta testers can access the preview. The final release is planned for the fall, alongside the introduction of the new iPhone 17 lineup and iPhone Air. When it ships, iOS 27 will be a free update for all compatible iPhones. Some features, including Call Context, will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later; Dual Capture will only work on the latest iPhone 17 models. Other improvements, such as the network handoff and Communication Safety update, will be available on a much broader range of devices that support iOS 27.
