Should You Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3?
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 was refreshed in September 2025, so now is an okay time to buy. Apple is not expected to release another Ultra model until September 2026, and any update is likely to include only minor upgrades. If you are upgrading from an older Ultra or a standard Apple Watch, the Ultra 3 offers meaningful improvements, including a larger and brighter display, slimmer bezels, 5G support, satellite connectivity, and improved battery life.
That said, the Ultra 3 might not be the right choice for everyone. It has a 49mm case, making it Apple's largest watch, and it may not fit people with smaller wrists. The third-generation Apple Watch Ultra follows the second-generation model released in September 2023. It is designed to compete with premium fitness watches from brands like Garmin, with a focus on endurance, exploration, and adventure. The case remains the largest Apple Watch size at 49mm, but Apple has updated the display and internal components.
Design and Display
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 keeps the same aerospace-grade titanium body, flat sapphire crystal face, larger Digital Crown, side button, and customizable Action button as previous Ultra models. The Action button is still international orange for visibility in the dark and underwater. The overall shape is unchanged, but the display bezels are now 24 percent thinner, increasing the viewable area from 1,185 sq mm on the Ultra 2 to 1,245 sq mm on the Ultra 3. This makes it the largest display of any Apple Watch, slightly beating the 46mm Series 11.
The Ultra 3 uses LTPO3 display technology with a wide-angle OLED panel. It can reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness while maintaining that brightness at wider viewing angles. A 15-minute charge provides up to 12 hours of normal use, and a five-minute charge can supply up to eight hours of sleep tracking.

Sleep apnea detection uses the accelerometer to monitor breathing patterns during sleep. The watch also provides sleep tracking, a Sleep Score, fall detection, and crash detection.
In the U.S., blood-oxygen readings are measured on the wrist and evaluated on the iPhone in the Health app due to a patent dispute. In other countries, the data is available directly on the watch. The ECG app can detect atrial fibrillation and normal sinus rhythm. Temperature sensing helps with fertility planning and ovulation estimates.
Activity and Outdoor Features
For water sports, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is certified WR100 and EN13319, making it suitable for kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. It includes a depth gauge and a Depth app that shows current depth, water temperature, duration underwater, and max depth. A Tides app is also included.
