What to Expect After Oral Surgery in Dubai

If you can sense something hard when you put your tongue to the operation site, you might think it is part of your tooth. This is the hard bone wall that supported your tooth initially.

What to Expect After Oral Surgery in Dubai

Proper recovery from oral surgery in Dubai is key to healing and long-term success. While you may have some apprehension regarding what to anticipate after surgery, your recovery will be unproblematic and steady if you prioritize it.

Our dos and don'ts will get you ready for your part in taking care of your oral and maxillofacial surgery recovery. And you will be able to reduce your pain, enhance your comfort, and promote healing of your mouth promptly. These are a few general instructions for oral surgery in Dubai, though, and not every one of these instructions might be relevant to your recovery.

The First Hour Post Oral Surgery in Dubai

Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze packs that have been put over the area after oral surgery at the Dubai dental hospital you are being treated at. Ensure that the gauze is left on, undisturbed for 30 minutes and then replaced by clean gauze.

Alternately, one can use a damp tea bag instead of gauze. No sleep, eating or drinking with the gauze in the mouth. If the bleeding continues in heavy amounts even while biting down on the gauze, it indicates the gauze is in a wrong position and not on top of the extraction site. Consult your dentist immediately or repeat the following steps:

  • Remove gauze.

  • Position gauze or tea bag so that it is pressing down on the area of bleeding.

  • Bite for 30 minutes to 1 hour on gauze.

Bleeding and Oozing

Bleeding oozing is to be expected for up to 24 hours and may continue longer if you are on blood thinners. The saliva will mix with blood, so you need to check for active bleeding. Repeat the above procedure as necessary and then discontinue the gauze after bleeding has stopped. Do not sleep while wearing any gauze or as suggested by your dentist at dental clinic in Dubai.

Pain

Unfortunately, oral surgery in Dubai is followed by some level of discomfort. There are several good ways to help you make it through. Some kind of pain medication should be taken before the numbness wears off. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or aspirin are sufficient

For more complex oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures, a prescribed narcotic may be used. The narcotic may also be alternated or used with ibuprofen if no allergies and well tolerated in the past. If you take your medications with food, it will reduce the risk of nausea. Keep in mind that narcotic pain medication will make your judgment and reflexes poorer, so you should not drive and use heavy machinery.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are used to prevent or treat infections, so take all the medication. If you have any untoward effects, stop the medication immediately.

Swelling

Swelling from oral surgery in Dubai is normal and peaks in 48 hours. Having the head elevated with 2 pillows when in bed can reduce facial swelling. Facial swelling can also be reduced by using cold compresses on your face every hour (30 minutes on, 30 minutes off) for the first 48 hours. Warm compresses will reduce the swelling after 48 hours. These should be continued (30 minutes on, 30 minutes off) until the swelling has gone.

Rinsing

Avoid rinsing the mouth for 24 hours post surgery, if suggested by your oral implantology medical center. It may disturb the clot. The following day, you may begin gently rinsing with warm (not hot) salt water. Dilute 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and rinse gently 3 or 4 times a day for 1 week.

 Spitting

Do not spit because this action can disrupt the blood clot and/or promote bleeding.

Brushing

Do not brush close to the surgical areas on the day of the operation, as there will be stitches that can be dislodged, as well as some pain and swelling. Resume your usual hygiene practice as soon as you can and carefully brush the areas you feel at ease with.

Diet

A balanced diet nutritionally is most important which is suggested by every dental clinic in Dubai or hospital. Eating cool/room temperature soups and soft foods that can be easily chewed and swallowed during the initial 24 hours. You can gradually move to solid foods in the coming days. Do not miss meals.

By having balanced meals at regular intervals, you will be better, regain strength, feel less uncomfortable, and recover more quickly. Take any food supplement prescribed, as instructed. If you are diabetic, maintain your normal diet and take medication as usual.

Nausea

Drink a carbonated beverage, such as ginger ale or cola, every 30 minutes until nausea subsides. You may also eat saltine crackers to help alleviate symptoms. If nausea persists, please call our office.

Dry Socket

When a dry socket is present, there is persistent pain that spreads to other parts of the jaw, teeth, and ear. Dry socket symptoms will not be felt until the third or fourth day after surgery, and it is caused by a loss of the blood clot in the socket. This is just like a scab peeling off the skin. Everything around will appear normal. If you don't experience improvement after a few days after the procedure, please contact the office. A medicated dressing can be placed to correct the discomfort.

Bruising

On occasion, bruising can be seen 24 or 48 hours after surgery has been completed. Use of warm compresses on the affected area (30 minutes on, 30 minutes off) will hasten healing. Visit any dental clinic in Jumeirah or other clinics depending on your location to consult with a dentist for minimal pain.

Smoking and Alcohol

Do not smoke or chew tobacco for 1 week following surgery. Alcohol is not to be taken with pain medication and/or antibiotics.
